Toolwiz Time Freeze

No doubt you suspect your Windows PC of hidden talents, and one of the coolest is virtualization. It clones your system, creating fully working copies that you can use normally (or abnormally) without risking your "real" system. Toolwiz Time Freeze makes virtualization very easy to use. It can also protect your files and folders from changes and provide password protection.
Time Freeze has a simple interface for starting and stopping its main features as well as adding files to the File Protection feature (Time Freeze warns not to include Windows system files) and enabling password protection or changing your password. There's a small, optional "toolbar" that merely displays the program's status on the desktop, but it's helpful if you switch between modes a lot. Most of the time, the program's system tray icon handles all the action.
Except for the toolbar and system tray, there's no indication when Time Freeze's virtual system is active, except for a very slight performance lag that will be familiar to anyone who's messed around with virtual machines; it's nothing serious or even annoying, but you can feel it. We ran CCleaner, deleted the files it found, and then exited Time Freeze. The program has two exit options: reject all changes, which requires a reboot, or accept all changes, which can take a minute or two. We chose the first option, but our BIOS called a boot error when none of our disks showed up. Hmm! A hard reboot called up Checkdisk, which found no errors, and Windows opened normally, though our Google preferences had disappeared and our desktop background was corrupted. But when we ran CCleaner, the files we'd deleted in protected mode were still there, so Time Freeze did its primary job. A second run-through also caused a boot failure. But we had no problems when we exited Time Freeze while accepting all changes, or with the File Protection feature.
Despite a few bugs, we really like what Time Freeze is doing here, taking advantage of your system's built-in but little-used capabilities to offer a truly useful new feature. It's a work in progress, but worth keeping an eye on.

Directory List & Print

Sometimes the best programs are those that don't contain a lot of bells and whistles, but that simply do a specific task easily and efficiently. Directory List and Print is one such program. This basic utility lets users create, save, and print lists of the files on their computers. It's not fancy, but that's the point; it's made to do one thing well with as little fuss as possible.
The program's interface is plain and easy to navigate, with panes displaying the user's directories and the program's output. Check boxes allow users to choose what information they want included in their list: date, time, size, path, and so on. Users then simply navigate to the desired directory, preview the contents in the output pane, and then choose what they want to do with it; the directory information can be printed, copied to the clipboard, or transferred to a Word document or Excel spreadsheet. Directory List and Print can also be added to the context menu, allowing users to right-click on any directory in Windows Explorer and launch the program. The utility comes with a brief PDF Help file, but we didn't need it; everything about it is intuitive. Overall, we think that Directory List and Print is a great choice for anyone seeking a simple way to print directories.
Directory List and Print comes as a ZIP file and is accessible after extraction with no need for installation. We recommend this program to all users.

PhotoInstrument

Photoinstrument provides a stunning amount of control when editing photos. Even with all the controls, the program still manages to be simple to operate, especially for those willing to invest the time.
Our first impressions were not positive since the program's interface looked slightly childish, thanks to command icons that are all various smiley faces. Fortunately, the tutorial videos that pop up immediately prove that this is a serious tool and seriously easy. We smoothly navigated the program's functions that are represented by the previously mentioned smileys, each offering ways to shade, erase blemishes, and even erase features (the tutorial's example shaves a few centimeters from a man's chin in a profile photo). It was a relief to find that all the tools followed the same pattern of adjusting the size and intensity with sliders and by clicking and dragging the changes on the picture. While a little clumsy at first, the tools got easier with a little practice. The best we tested were the tools that subtly erased blemishes because they smoothly blended the skin defects into the healthy flesh. Our favorite feature was its Original button, which let us toggle between the changes and the untouched photo. Overall, each tool was effective and simple to understand, though each required patience in perfecting.
Photoinstrument's trial does not let users save their work. While the program looks childish and takes some practice, its results were professional enough that we recommend it.

The disk analysis and error checking stages were noticeably quicker than the Windows tool, and a roughly 5 percent fragmented, 150GB primary partition hosting a copy of Vista took mere minutes to completely defragment.
Regular disk defragmentation can keep your system running fast and smooth, but the Windows tool takes so long that many users don't take advantage of it, even with scheduling. Defrag Pro's speed, flexibility, and ease of use combined with its unique ability to prevent data fragmentation answers every shortcoming.

LightLogger Keylogger

It gets points for simplicity, but this keylogger can't be hidden from experienced users. LightLogger lacks an interface. It starts logging on install, and you merely invoke the keystrokes display as needed. The log is a simple HTML page that displays the application and its keystrokes. The keystroke display is very basic. You have no idea where in the application the keys were pressed. LightLogger fails to track backspace and delete keys. An option to display passwords failed to reveal any, but they were displayed in the regular logs. Of course, this application doesn't log any mouse movements or tabbing in windows. Saved passwords that aren't actually typed aren't captured either. This program is simple enough to operate for the most novice of users, but it leaves an obvious process easily found using Task Manager. The program's home page is in Russian and there is no local help screen. Uninstalling the program reboots your machine even if you choose not to do so immediately. If you can't afford a full-featured keylogger, this freeware might do the job for you. That is, if you only have novices using your system.

FastPictureViewer (32-bit) is an attractive image viewer that lets users quickly scan through images, view histograms and image metadata, and label photos. Although the program doesn't have a lot of features, it makes up for it to some extent with a very nice appearance. The program's interface is quite sleek, with its functions organized in four buttons at the lower left corner. In kiosk mode, the program removes the title bar at the top and the taskbar, allowing users to maximize the viewing area. Overall, the program's appearance is very professional and modern, making it a pleasure to work with. Our only criticism of the interface is that moving between subfolders and parent folders is not particularly intuitive. The program's built-in Help file is quite brief and is more a list of keyboard functions than an explanation of how the program works. The program's features are not particularly impressive, although they all function as they should. The program displays an RGB histogram, as well as a metadata panel that shows the image's original exposure information. The program provides a basic labeling function that mimics that of other popular image browsers such as Lightroom and ViewNX. Users should be aware that the program is indeed an image viewer and not an image editor; you won't be doing any tweaking or correcting. FastPictureViewer is free. It installs desktop icons without asking but uninstalls cleanly. We recommend this program for users looking for an attractive, lightweight way to view images.
