Toolwiz Time Freeze

No doubt you suspect your Windows PC of hidden talents, and one of the coolest is virtualization. It clones your system, creating fully working copies that you can use normally (or abnormally) without risking your "real" system. Toolwiz Time Freeze makes virtualization very easy to use. It can also protect your files and folders from changes and provide password protection.
Time Freeze has a simple interface for starting and stopping its main features as well as adding files to the File Protection feature (Time Freeze warns not to include Windows system files) and enabling password protection or changing your password. There's a small, optional "toolbar" that merely displays the program's status on the desktop, but it's helpful if you switch between modes a lot. Most of the time, the program's system tray icon handles all the action.
Except for the toolbar and system tray, there's no indication when Time Freeze's virtual system is active, except for a very slight performance lag that will be familiar to anyone who's messed around with virtual machines; it's nothing serious or even annoying, but you can feel it. We ran CCleaner, deleted the files it found, and then exited Time Freeze. The program has two exit options: reject all changes, which requires a reboot, or accept all changes, which can take a minute or two. We chose the first option, but our BIOS called a boot error when none of our disks showed up. Hmm! A hard reboot called up Checkdisk, which found no errors, and Windows opened normally, though our Google preferences had disappeared and our desktop background was corrupted. But when we ran CCleaner, the files we'd deleted in protected mode were still there, so Time Freeze did its primary job. A second run-through also caused a boot failure. But we had no problems when we exited Time Freeze while accepting all changes, or with the File Protection feature.
Despite a few bugs, we really like what Time Freeze is doing here, taking advantage of your system's built-in but little-used capabilities to offer a truly useful new feature. It's a work in progress, but worth keeping an eye on.

Navy Field: Resurrection of the Steel Fleet

Navy Field is a massively multi-player online game based upon actual WWII naval battles. We have created graphically engineered models of actual WWII ships, weapons, aircraft, and munitions from Germany, the United States, U.K, and Japan to use in these battles. Players are asked to construct ships, add armament combinations, and position sailors to execute specific tasks. What's new in this version: Version 1.341 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

Plasmaworm

Plasmaworm is an arcade game for all ages. It's a modern relative of early computer games such as Snake and Tron Light Cycles but that's where the comparison ends. Plasmaworm features 360-degree movement, stereo sound with doppler shift, bosses, psychedelic graphics, solo, two player cooperative, duel (death match) play modes, 20 bizarre ambient music tracks, 20 mind-mangling puzzle levels, a level editor, a music editor, and a plasma editor. Shogi for You and Me (demo)

First I should explain that Shogi is a version of Chess, or Chess is a version of Shogi. They both come from the same game invented many centuries ago. Shogi is different from Chess in several ways, but the biggest is that pieces that are captured are used by the player who captured them. So 'end game' as found in Chess does not happen in Shogi. Shogi also has a 9 x 9 playing board instead of an 8 x 8 board like Chess. The pieces in Shogi are King, Knight, Pawn, Bishop, Rook, Gold General, Silver General and Lance. (These of course are not the Japanese names for the pieces.) One challenge to new players of Shogi, is that traditionally the pieces have Kanji on them. This is very hard for English speakers. I've modified this to version to use either Kanji OR pictures which make more sense to English speakers. I've also made some levels of the game play easier for players, so that even a young child can find a level they can win against. This will introduce anyone new to Shogi in a gentle way, before they tackle the Kanji version. Shogi is a Japanese version of chess. If you enjoy chess you'll love Shogi. I have included a traditional Kanji style token view as well as a beautiful icon style view that I call "Davis Style" tokens (Catchy name, no?). What's new in this version: Added another challenging computer opponent Added the ability to view tokens with traditional Kanji as well as icons

BubbleKing

BubbleKing is an interesting puzzle game. It has three different levels of difficulty, this makes it suitable for all people from children to strategists who enjoy the challenge. It's for anyone who enjoys puzzles, you can play with your family to spend the sweet time! The game field is a square of cells. Each side of the square has a layer of bubbles, and there are some bubbles in the centre of square. When you click the marginal bubble, then it will move towards the centre of square until it can not continue to go ahead.

GameHouse Word Collection

Though this package presents a bargain to those who buy it, experiencing a real demonstration of all three games in one hour is tough. GameHouse Word Collection bundles three interesting word games: Super TextTwist, Super Wild Wild Words, and Super WhatWord. Super TextTwist, the best of the bunch, asks you to form as many words as you can out of seven letters; if you form at least one seven-letter word, you move on to the next level. In Super Wild Wild Words, you join letters to clear them from the field and earn chances to guess letters for a Hangman phrase; to move on, you must solve the phrase. Super WhatWord has you swap the positions of letters to form words that clear automatically; you progress to the next level by forming the specific "WhatWords" listed. As a RealArcade title, the usual installation issues apply. The time limit becomes more onerous because there is more gameplay to explore. However, anyone who likes word puzzles likely will find GameHouse Word Collection addictive. Download: Gamehouse World Collection

Tribes: Vengeance single-player demo 2

Tribes: Vengeance might not have the graphics of Doom 3, the physics engine of Half-Life 2, or even the advanced artificial intelligence of Far Cry, but its frenetic action and jet-packing make for excellent fun, and this second single-player demo provides plenty of free content and variety for players to get an excellent feel for the game. You play Mercury, a robot assassin who must infiltrate the Phoenix's computer system, identify the subclan leader Daniel, and take him out.
If you've played any of the games mentioned above, the graphics of Tribes: Vengeance might feel like a blast from the near past. However, the controls are tight, and shooting is fair and accurate. The energy-boost system, combined with flying through the air and easy grenade access, leads to explosive firefights. The mission doesn't last forever, but you get more than enough enemies to blast and a large environment to explore. Although we didn't experience any major crashes during play, load times seem interminable; starting and quitting the demo require patience as well. If you're looking for pure action, give the first single-player demo a whirl. For an excellent look at how the single-player missions unfold, try this demo.

Word Search Construction Kit

This application lets you create customized word searches for classroom exercises or just for fun. An intuitive interface gets you started right away by offering premade puzzles in several categories. Within seconds, we were able to create a playable word search using the bundled puzzle topics, and within minutes, we made a puzzle from scratch using our own words in the shape we chose. Word Search Construction Kit offers several options for puzzle layouts, from common shapes such as rectangles to quirkier ones such as snowflakes and cars. You also can adjust the layout of clues and how you want the puzzle to fit on the page. You can play the game from within the app or print out multiple copies for a group or classroom. The only problem we encountered was a bug with the shareware limitation. The program claimed to have expired after a single day, 29 days short of what the developer promised. Nevertheless, we highly recommend this app to teachers looking to tailor a challenging puzzle to their students' needs.
